Hatsukami Bo Odori (Stick/Staff Dance)

Category Name:Furyu (Stick/Staff Dance)

This is a local art form from the Hatsugami district of Youra. It is said to have been handed down from Kusatsuyama in the neighbouring village of Fukada to the Hatsukami district during the Edo period, and was performed at the Youra Aso Shrine Grand Festival on October 19th and at other village festivals. The dance is performed by four or five groups of six people, who beat sticks to the accompaniment of a singer. Due to depopulation, low birth rate and an aging population, the dancers cannot be secured, so the dance has been suspended and there is no prospect of resuming.
