Higashi Samano Kame Odori (Turtle Dance)

Category Name:Other

In 1608, during the construction of Unose Weir by Kato Kiyomasa, a large turtle came up from the river. Local people offered it sake before it returned to the river. When construction was completed, the people celebrated by creating a dance which brought a turtle float to the site. In 1894 (Meiji 27), the dance was greatly changed. In the 3rd year of the Showa era (1926-1989), the dance was performed during in the commemoration of the Emperor's Grand Ceremony. In the 30th year, it was performed for the opening of the Hiwase Bridge. In Showa 57 it was held during the Ayu salmon Festival, in Showa 62 for the National Cultural Festival, and in Showa 63 for the Prefectural Cultural Festival. The turtle float is now stored in the community center.
