Kagura dances performed in Tamana City all belong to the Higo Kagura tradition. Higo Kagura is the most widespread type of Kagura in the prefecture. It is thought to have been originally performed by Shinto priests, and consists mainly of Torimono-mai (a dance performed holding objects). The performers do not wear masks and the dance is characterized by the performers holding a bell in their right hand and an object or tool in their left hand. These objects are mainly swords, bows, sakaki (sprigs of evergreen used in Shinto ceremonies) and gohei (wooden wands decorated with two paper streamers). Many of the dances are named after the objects they hold. The only masked dance is called “Kunitsu” in which a demon god appears, but in Tamana, many areas call the dance "Godan", while in Yokoshima, it is known as "Niten".
