Details of the origin of this performance are unknown, but the Itoda district has long been prone to flooding, and ropes have been made for protection from floods. It is said that the making of ropes led to the start of a tug-of-war between two teams of villagers. Fire department members now organize this annual tug-of-war on the Sunday closest to the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar.
