Danshichi Odori is said to have been modeled after "Shiraishi Story", a story about the defeat of an enemy in Shiraishi, Oshu Sendai domain in 1637. Kabayama Danshichi Odori consists of 12 levels of stories, and is performed to the beat of shimedaiko (drums) and gongs, with one dancer telling the story and the other dancer chiming in. It is said to have been handed down in this area from Fukakasumi, Hinokage-cho, Miyazaki Prefecture in the middle of the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Performances stopped around the beginning of the Showa Period (1926-1989), but since the tools/props had been kept, it was reintroduced after WWII. This dance has no fixed date or place, but is performed on special occasions.
