Kami-kagami Shishi-mai (Lion Dance)

Category Name:Lion Dance / Tiger Dance / Bull Dance (Lion Dance)
The Kami-kagami Lion Dance, handed down in the Kami-kagami district of Kagami-machi, was performed during the inauguration ceremony of Miyahara Sanjingu (Hikawa-cho, Yatsushiro-gun) celebrated by various towns and villages in 1839. It is said that the lion dance of the Yatsushiro Myoken Festival was performed by the people from the Kami-kagami district and was so well received that full commitment to the dance started with a master invited from the former Yatsushiro City to practice. Before WWII, the performance led the parade during the Sanjingu Autumn Grand Festival, but is now dedicated to the festival of Kami-kagami Tenmangu Shrine in late September. While sharing some parts in common with the Myoken lion dance such as lion costumes, the dance has many differences in movements and other respects.
