Sometake Bo-Odori (Stick/Staff Dance)

Category Name:Furyu (Stick/Staff Dance)

The Sometake Stick Dance presents a scene in which a daughter is training to avenge her father's death. The dance began around 1955, when people from Minamata City's Samukawa district saw the stick dance while going to work, were impressed by it, and asked to learn it. Later, when Sometake people saw the dance, they too took it up and it has been continued to this day. It is said to originate in the Kugino-Samukawa area of Minamata City, with influences from Satsuma in the mid-Meiji period.
