Sugawara Shrine Kagura-mai Taiko Osori (Kagura Dance & Taiko Drum Dance)
Active
Category Name:Kagura
This special kagura dance is based on the musical performances used in dedications at Ise Imperial Shrine. It is performed during the autumn festival and consists of kagura-mai, taiko-odori and tokosei. Kagura-mai is a festival containing various important rituals: niho-hai, shiho-hai and sho-kagura. For example, shihohai is performed by the Emperor at New Year and is therefore a very important ceremony, even just in its representation. The ‘shrine maidens’ for this performance are boys, and they carry a ceremonial staff (gohei) and bells. Other instruments such as large and small taiko drums, flutes, and an assortment of large and small bells, all add to the ceremonial flair of this event. In the taiko-odori and tokosei performances, the dancers beat the drums while rushing from side to side. Tokosei, a special dance display with a lacquered chest on a pole, is also performed while dancing to this rhythm.
