Sumoto no Taiko Odori (Drum Dance)
Active
Category Name:Furyu (Furyu Style Dance)
This is a taiko dance dedicated to Sumoto Suwa Shrine, which was built in 1645. The dance is performed at the Sumoto Festival, held every year on the second Sunday in November. This taiko dance originated in Kyoto, and in 1806, a master taiko drummer named Tatsugoro added flute and dance to the original dance, and the current form was created. Now it is passed down by the youth group of the town. Following the Mikoshi, Torige, and Shishi-mai (lion dance), the dance departs from the Otabisho (rest place during the parade) and travels around the town on a 4km route to the shrine. Performances include a "Douchu no Odori (Dance on the Road) ," "Chukaku no Odori (Core Dance) ," and "Shiranui Odori". It is one of the most magestic and spectacular of the many similar taiko dances which canbe seen in Amakusa.
