Taihouon-Shime Sai Festival
Active
Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)
Since the first year of Daido (806), when the shrine was founded, the festival has been held once every 50 years. It is said that in ancient times the gods descended only on special occasions, and that the festival has been operated so as not to forget the way our ancestors conducted their god festivals. The top of a 10-meter-high green bamboo pole erected in front of the sacred tree is wrapped with a rope, and three sacred staffs representing the sun, moon, and stars are placed at the top, with five colored staffs representing all the elements below. A sacred rope is then hung down in eight directions, and white staffs and boat ornaments are hung from the rope. A torii gate is placed under a green bamboo pole, and offerings, ears of rice, and flowers are arranged on both sides of the gate. "Taiho-Onshime" is this special altar in accordance with the ancient ceremony, under which the Kuma Kagura is performed until late in the evening.
