Aoi Aso Shrine Festival, Okunchi Festival Shinko Procession
Active
Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)
The origin of the procession is not known, but there is a record that one of the portable shrines carrying the deities was dedicated ,along with a pair of blue and red lion masks, in 1641 by Yorihiro, the 21st generation of the Sagara family. At 10:00 a.m., eight lions fly out of the hall of worship into the shrine grounds, and the curtain opens. The portable shrine has been carried on a cart for about 50 years, followed by sacred horses carrying priests, children in gorgeous costumes, adult mikoshi, and others. The lions gallantly run down the street, and parents, children, and elderly people can be seen having their heads bitten to pray for good health.
