Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

Bairin Tenmangu Yabusame is a popular horseback archery event known locally as “Yakusandon”. It is held annually on the 25th of November at the Grand Autumn Festival of Bairin Tenmangu Shrine. The archers on horseback aim to hit 9 targets in total. This event is part of a series of Shinto rituals which have been passed down within the local farming community. The rituals take place over 3 days between November 23rd and the 26th, they include Shojin-goya-iri, Shio-tori, Baba-toushi, Yabusame, and Setto-kuji. The Yabusame archery ritual takes place at several other shrines in Kumamoto Prefecture however, Bairin Tenmangu is the only shrine where these other Shinto rituals have also been passed down with the Yabusame.
