Bon Odori (Bon Dance)

Category Name:Furyu (Bon Dance)

This traditional Bon Dance of the Narakino District was restarted for the first time in 45 years by the head of the ward and other local volunteers. The Bon dance of Narakino district is a tradition performed only at households which are holding their first Bon Festival (the first Bon festival after a member of the family has died). The purpose of the Bon dance is to entertain and make offerings to the newly departed spirits. In the Namino district, similar Bon dances are performed in Akanida and other localities. The five members of the group who brought the Bon dance back had all danced together as children. They revived the choreography and the song called "Kudoki" from memory. There are seven different types of Bon Odori, including 'Mitsubyoushi' and 'Danshichi', which begins with the words 'Gomen kudasa re, kono-ka no teishu… ..'. The dance goes on for about 50 minutes, with people waving fans and bamboo sticks in the air, to the accompaniment of the unique "Kudoki"song and music. The dance is performed in the gardens of families celebrating their first Bon Festival and all ages from nursery school children to elderly people in their seventies take part.
