The origin of this dance is not clear, but it has been handed down from generation to generation, and is one of the Usu-Daiko Mortar Drum dances performed throughout the southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. It is said that the survivors of the Taira clan, lamenting their bad luck after being defeated by the Minamoto clan, dedicated this dance to the gods in hopes of their return to power.
