Ebisu Festival

Active

Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

This is a traditional event (dating back 300 years) held annually on October 20 in the Hirashima district. To pray for the prosperity of the community, residents gather at the house of the district head to present offerings at a statue of Ebisu, one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune (different from the Harukoma Ebisu mentioned below). This statue was donated by the head of the district about 50 years ago. Those who gather enjoy drinking and eating and strengthening ties of friendship. This was a horse breeding area in the past. When Kumamoto Castle was built, many people and horses were provided for the construction. It is said that a statue of Harukoma Ebisu (literally Spring Horse Ebisu) was given as a token of thanks.
