This dance was performed about 200 to 300 years ago, when land reclamation work was in full swing. Young girls who left home to find work who were overwhelmed by their first job, endured the hardships of the work by singing a song called "Ozaya-bushi".This song expressed their tragic stories of romance and the seriousness of the land reclamation work. It was originally sung about the reclamation work in the area of now Kagami-machi, Yatsushiro City, and was introduced to Funatsu about 100 years ago, when a port was built there. It has continued to be handed down by the women of Funatsu to the present day. The dance is performed to the tune of Ozaya-bushi, imitating the work of reclamation.
