This dance is said to have originated in the Iki Tsushima region of Nagasaki Prefecture and is believed to be of Chinese and Korean origin. It was introduced by fishermen who went fishing in the same region about 300 years ago. It is recorded that the dance was dedicated as a rain dance during a severe drought in 1724 (the 9th year of the Kyoho Period).
