Hakusan Festival in Yamada Village

Active

Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

The festival was already held at the end of the Middle Ages, during the Tenbun era (1532-1555), and although it is now simplified, it is a ritual that has been carried out for several hundred years. The main deity is Shirayama Hime no Kami, who is enshrined at the Yamada Hiyoshi Shrine with other gods. There are 12 "bou" (lodgings) in the Yamada district that are preserved by the descendants of Shugendo practitioners (Yamabushi - Mountain ascetics). Every year on the 29th of November, a festival is held with a different "bou" representative taking turns leading the festival.
