Hibuse Jizou Festival

Active

Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

The Jizo Festival used to be held on August 22 and 23 of the western calendar , but is now held on the third Saturday and Sunday in August. After World War II, the festival included a wake-up event, a costume parade, a float parade, and theatrical performances to suit their costumes (e.g., improvisation, farces) On the first day of the festival, the town is decorated with items made from household goods, and floats with three drums of various sizes are pulled out to the beat of the "Hibuse Daiko" . On the second day, young men carry stone Jizo statues on red portable shrines around the town. At each house on the street, water is poured on the Jizo from buckets (to symbolize putting out a fire). The festivities end with the young people jumping into the Gokase River and splashing each other.
