Hiroo Usokae Festival

Active

Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

This festival is held every year on November 29 at Hiroo Sugawara Shrine. Numbered cards are handed out to parishioners and children of the district in advance. On the day of the festival, cardholders exchange numbers with others around them while calling out, "Kaemasho, kaemasho" (Let's trade!). After the exchange, everyone draws a number from a wooden box. Whoever draws a matching number inscribed with the Chinese characters for the 1st year of Tenpo (1830) wins a prize, making this a popular event to pray for good luck.
