Itchouda Hachiman-gu Shrine Mushi Oi Festival

Active

Category Name:Production and Livelihood

Since the Kan'ei era (1624-1643), the festival has been held after rice planting (early July) to pray for a good harvest. The flagpole is made of 15 to 20 meters of madake bamboo with 25 to 30 cloth flags of five colors of flag silk weaving attached. The flagpole weighs about 30 to 40 kg, but when a light breeze blows, the wind power allows one person to carry it, and it is paraded along the bank of the Itchoda River accompanied by beating gongs and drums. Before World War II, each group of shrine parishioners dedicated a flag to the festival, and it used to be a gorgeous event with about 15 flags, but now only 7 flags remain. Since 1995, children's flags and acrobatics have been added to make the event more lively.
