Jugoya-no-Tsuna-hiki (Fifteenth Night Tug of War)
Category Name:Annual Event
This is a traditional New Year's event that has been passed down in this area for several hundred years. Some 120 residents have a group tug-of-war, as a demonstration of hope for a good harvest and good health. According to residents, in the old days children collected rice straw from local farmers and wove a rope. On the night of January 15 they held a tug-of-war.. The giant rope is more than 20 meters long and is currently woven once every 10 years. The center of the rope is about 30 cm in diameter. There are about 30 ropes for shaking the main rope up and down and six pull ropes at each end. Residents bow to the rope (2 bows 2 claps and 1 bow) and offer sake, vegetables, and rice. On the cue of the drums, the people in charge shake the main rope which is repeatedly slapped against the ground. The participants, divided into two groups, then begin pulling the rope.
