Kagami-ga-Ike Pond Funa-tori Shinji (Carp-Catch Shinto Ritual)

Active

Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

It is held on April 7th at the Spring Grand Festival of the Innyaku Shrine in Kagami-machi. It is said to be based oon the legend that at the beginning of the 5th century, when Ishikawa-no-Sukune (the deity of Innyaku Shrine) stopped by during his Kyushu Campaign, young people in the village jumped into a pond, grabbed carp, and presented them to him. After the Shinko procession arrives at the pond, about 50 young people in shimekomi loincloths jump into a pond, catch carp with their hands, and throw mud at onlookers. It is said that those hit with mud will enjoy health, and the fish caught are presented to Innyaku Shrine.
