Kami-kawashimo Shishi-Odori (Lion Dance)
Category Name:Lion Dance / Tiger Dance / Bull Dance (Lion Dance)
This is a local art form from the Kami-kawashimo district of Kawabe. It has been handed down by the eldest son of the district. The origin of the performance is unknown, but in 1983 the Nara Cultural Properties Protection Association investigated the demon masks used in the dance and found that they were from the early Edo period (the 1680s). The lion dance was first performed to thank the farmers for their help during a hunt. This is the only lion dance in the Kuma region. The dance has been suspended due to the aging of the population and the lack of the dancers, and there is no prospect of it resuming.
