Category Name:Annual Event

This is a traditional annual event held on August 19, when straw boats (segaki-bune) and offerings are floated down the Shirakawa River as prayers for the well-being of people and animals, and to pay respects to the dead. In the morning, sutra readings and other memorial services are held in front of the graves of ancestors on the Tsushira Bridge. In the afternoon, segaki-bune boats in the shape of horses are made. In the past, the boats were set free to float down the river, but now, for envionmental considerations, the boats are placed on a playground and participants select the best boat.
