It is performed at a house holding a first O-bon on August 14 to pay respect to a deceased family member. Should there be no deaths in the community during the past year, the dance is held at a larger venue such as a community center. It is said to have been passed down orally by a woman who came from Tsurusaki in Oita as a servant for the Nasu family in Katamata in the late modern era.
