Kawauchi Heike Dance
Active
Category Name:Furyu (Mortar Drum Dance)
There are no detailed records of the "Kawauchi no Heike Odori", but , according to former dancers, by 1973 two or three generations of dancers had been replaced. Originally, it is said, the instructions for the beating of drums and ringing of bells were handed down orally, but thanks to the foresight of earlier generations, the score was written down sometime in the late Taisho or early Showa periods and has been followed ever since. The Kawauchi area is located on the spine of the Kyushu Central Mountain Range. Iin the past, people travelled to and from Itsuki Village and Kureko, Izumi Town, and Yatsushiro City. That may be a reason why this dance is called “Heike Odori” as there are similarities to the Usudaiko drum dance in Kureko.
