Kutaragi District Bo-Odori (Stick/Staff Dance)

Category Name:Furyu (Stick/Staff Dance)

A bo-odori (stick/staff dance) from the Kutaragi district of Sakamoto-machi is a heroic dance in which roku-shaku (about 6-foot) staves and swords are held by a group in formation, and taiko drums and recitations are played in unison. It is said that the dance was handed down by people from Kagoshima from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji era , and then the elderly of the area added their own creativity and ingenuity to make it what it is today. It has been handed down from generation to generation mainly by the eldest sons of the district, and has been dedicated to the Kutaragi Shrine Grand Festival and prayers for rain, but has been inactive in recent years.
