Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

This is a ritual in which residents take turns playing the role of gods, praying for peace in the district. It is said that this ceremony has been held for more than 900 years and is based on the legend that the god of Matsuyama Shrine landed on the coast of this area. The perishioners take turns playing the role of gods (one "oya-gami" or parent god, and two "ko-gami" or child gods). After the ritual, they line up at the altar wearing matching red kamishimo with the symbol of the deities, "gohei", behind their backs. After receiving a cup from the previous year's gods in white kamishimo, the three gods drink the sake poured into the cup and hold it above their heads and they pass it around the 40 participants. After this, the gods and the participants parade around near the community center.
