The hana-yakko (bearers of the lord’s items) attending the shinko-gyoretsu procession at Myoken Festival are said to follow the tradition of Toraemon of Matsue Village, who served as a spear bearer to Matsui Naoyuki, lord of Yatsushiro Castle, and can be confirmed to have attended the procession in 1752 (Horeki 2). After that, the role was inherited by the Tanaka family in Kougobara Village, and is now preserved and handed down by the people of the Matsutaka area. A strict rule of yore was that people outside the area could not join the group. Holding Hasami-bako (traveling chests) containing the lord's costume, Tategasa poles in the shape of a folded umbrella for the lord, and Daigasa poles with a cloth-covered lord's conical hat, the hana-yakko proceed while chanting the encouragement “Seitokosei!"
