Active

Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

Kazriuma, also called Hanama, are decorative horses which liven up the Myoken festival with a brave horse chase. In the Edo period, there were 12 vassals of Yatsushiro Castle (vassals of Lord Hosokawa dispatched from Kumamoto to guard Yatsushiro Castle). Matsui's vassals originally totalled 12 but were later assigned to Yatsushiro County. From the Meiji era to the prewar period, Yatsushiro Shrine's parishioners were excluded from participating, but current volunteers include the high school alumni association. Order is decided by lottery at Shioya Hachimangu, the temporary shrine, in the early morning of the festival day.
