Nagasu-no-Yomeiri Uta (Bride’s song of Nagasu)
Active
Category Name:Life Events / Rituals
The bride's song is called "Nonshikora", and is known throughout the Japanese folk song community as a "Kumamoto Min-yo (folk song)". Since the early Edo period (1603-1868) it was the custom along the coast of the Ariake Sea for friends and acquaintances of the bride to sing this song at the time of her wedding, and to wish the bride good fortune by clapping hands as a sendoff from the doorway of her house. In Nagasu Town in particular, this custom continued until around 1935, so the song came to be known as "The Nagasu Bride Song".
