Naka-machi Chawan-bachi (Plate Twirling)

Active

Category Name:Entertainment and competition

Three years ago, Matsubase High School worked on the revival and succession of one of Matsubase's traditional performing arts, "Naka-machi no Chawanbachi". This is one of the performances that Nakamachi has offered up at the autumn festival of Matsubase Shrine since the early Meiji era. Puppets spin plates against a background of musical accompaniment to celebrate a good harvest. The highlight of the performance is at the end when the puppets are transformed into lanterns. At that moment they cry out "Ato wa toro~" which is a play on words combining "toro~" (please pass by..) and "toro~" (light up).
