Ohama Toshima Sumiyoshi Shrine Nenk-sai Kome-hiki (Annual Rice Bale Pulling) Festival, Goshinko Event (Shinto Procession)

Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

The Ohama Toshima Sumiyoshi Shrine Festival is held every 10 to 20 years. The main events at the festival include ‘Komehiki’ (rice-pulling) and ‘Goshinko’. ‘Komehiki’ is an event in which rice from each district is pulled on carts in a procession and then dedicated to the shrine. ‘Goshinko’ includes ‘Togyo to Otabisho’, in which a sacred palanquin is lodged during the festival, and ‘Kaijo Togyo’ (Funa Togyo). ‘Funa Togyo’ is a Shinto ritual using boats in which the parishioners reenact how the statue of the Great God Sumiyoshi was swept into Ohama from the sea and enshrined and welcomed by the villagers. The festival is a reminder of how Ohama Town once prospered in the mid to late Edo era, when the outer harbor of the Takase Port functioned as a bustling port, where Higo rice was shipped to Osaka.
