Oriji-no-Kai-Kai Ningyo (Kai-Kai Doll of Oriji)

Category Name:Annual Events

The word kaikai in Oriji's Kaikai Dolls comes from the dialect word karau, meaning "to give a piggyback ride". It is a very interesting and unique dance which looks as if a doll dances to a song while carrying a human on its back. There are various theories about the origin of the dance. One holds that it was performed to welcome Emperor Keiko when he landed at Nagasu shore. Another states that it started as a dance to pray for rain. The activities of the Preservation Society have been suspended since April 2021.
