Category Name:

The Dragon Dance and Dragon Drum were recreated in 1989 by a professional director from the area, based on a legend of the Dragon God. The Dragon Dance is a reenactment of a folk tale passed down in the Tatsuno District, in which the villagers built a fire and danced for 10 days to appease the Dragon God, who was angry with them for withholding tribute. The Dragon Drum is a commemoration of a battle fought in 1581 between Kai Souun, then Lord of Mifune Castle, and Sagara Yoshihi, Lord of Hitoyoshi Castle, over Kosa Castle. A dragon mask is worn and hand gongs and drums are played while people shout, “A dragon comes forth! A dragon comes forth!”
