Shinmura Kenchiku Odori (Builders Dance)
Category Name:Other
A local performing art from the Shinmura district of Yanase. The history of the construction dance is unknown. It is said that the dance was originally performed either to celebrate the completion of the construction of Kumamoto Castle by Lord Kato Kiyomasa or of Hitoyoshi Castle by the Sagara family, and was handed down by an old man who visited the area over a hundred years ago. The dance was performed when public facilities, temples and shrines were built or completed. Accompanied by shamisen and taiko drums, the dancers use comical movements to represent the work of the village chief, contractor, master builder, woodcutter, carpenter, plasterer and others. After performing at the 400th anniversary of the construction of Kumamoto Castle and at the local summer festival in 2015, the group has been inactive due to depopulation and ageing of the population, making it difficult to secure dancers and musicians. There is no prospect of resumption.
