The 600-year-old Nagoshi Festival is held at Sakashita Aso Shrine. When the shrine's hall of worship was destroyed by fire, the parishioners took great pains to rebuild it. Some years saw outbreaks of epidemics. To ward off such difficulties, a "Nankoshi" (Pass-Over-Hardships) Festival started being held. This is the origin of the name "Nagoshi". In recent years, the festival has been called the "Nagoshi Matsuri" to pray for a safe passage through the summer and for a good harvest. After the ritual, dances and other performances dedicated to the gods attract a large crowd of area people. Food stalls are also set up, and fireworks are set off in the evening.
