It is said that these drums were used as rain-makers during the Edo period (1603-1868). After the Meiji period (1868-1912) they were used to communicate information to the residents of the district. As the drums became old and worn out, Nishi-Goshi Town (pre-merger) restored the drums at the request of Suya district, and the Suya Drum Preservation Society was formed to revitalize the community and preserve and pass on these cultural properties. Today, the drums are carefully stored in the warehouse of the community center.
