Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

The Suya-Goya Jizo Festival is held every year to pray for traffic safety and to create better relationships among community residents. Four Jizo statues watch over the festival. During the Meiji Era (1868-1912), the festival was very crowded and quarrels often occurred so it was also known as the "Fighting Jizo". It was suspended once around 1940 due to the intensifying, and again around 1950 in consideration of traffic safety as the number of cars began to increase. Thanks to the efforts of local people, it was revived in 1975.
