Takabata Toshine Shrine Taue Odori (Rice Planting Dance)
Active
Category Name:Dengaku (rice planting shinto ceremony)
This dance is performed at the summer festival of Takahata Toshine Shrine. It is said to have been introduced from Miyazaki Prefecture. In this rice-planting dance, dancers dress in happi coats and red sashes (which are used to tie up the sleeves of their happis), wear bamboo woven hats (Sugegasa), and cover their faces with light cotton hand towels (tenugui). They dance the 8th dance to the accompaniment of taiko drums, recreating the scene of rice planting in the old days. The performance consists of a series of scenes of the agricultural work leading up to rice planting: "Azekiri," "Taokosi," "Arashiroro," "Azenuri," "Ueshiro,""Kuwashiro," "Taue (painting the rice)," and "Shishitsuri (lion dance)". Before each performance, the dancers always bend down, clap twice, and perform one bow.
