Takachiho Kagura originated in the Takachiho region of Miyazaki Prefecture, but eight volunteers from the Kaminosho district who were parishioners of the Takaba Hiyoshi Shrine, trained themselves and brought the kagura back to the city as a performing folk art. Since then, it has been conducted by residents of Kaminosho district during the annual grand festival of Takaba Hiyoshi Shrine. Due to declining birthrates, an aging population, and other factors, this event is in critical danger of being lost, but the city is exploring preservation measures.
