This lion dance is dedicated to Togawa Aso Shrine. It is also dedicated to Kengun Shrine (Kumamoto City). There is no written record of the origin of the festival, but it is said that the lion dance was dedicated to quell a famine and epidemic 300 to 400 years ago. Nowadays, it is dedicated to pray for a good harvest. This lion dance is said to be of the "Rokka (Kashima Town) lion" lineage. The Togawa community is divided into three areas, and each area becomes in charge of the festival once every three years.
