Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

The festival is held on the 20th of October at Kumanoza Shrine, the local shrine in Hakodani. The festival is also known as the Hatsuka-matsuri.("hatsuka" means the 20th day of the month or 20 days.) The festival begins at around 8pm, a ritual is held in which a small wooden "shoshi", (this looks like a kamidana - household Shinto altar) is passed from one “zamoto”, called 'Miyamochi', to the next. (This is the name given to a person responsible for the ritual.) The Miyamochi enshrines this altar in their house for one year. There are no specific qualifications for men and women to take part, but it is customary for men to dress as women and women to dress as men during the ritual.
