Yama-no-Kami Matsuri (Mountain God Festival)

Active

Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

This is a traditional event to pray for an abundant harvest, in which about 20 people, including elementary and junior high school students, and their parents, make offerings to the mountain god; who is the god of agriculture, the sea and water. It is said that only men could participate in the festival because the god is actually considered to be a scornful goddess who will be jealous if women join in! The festival began about 300 years ago, and, although it was temporarily suspended, it was revived with the establishment of a Children's Association. In the past only children participated. They wore happi festival coats and started off by shouting; "The mountain god is here now!" before scrambling up the mountain behind the area. After about 15 minutes, they would arrive at the sacred rock, where they would offer okoze, or stonefish, and dumplings. The dumplings were beaten twice with a wooden stick, of about one meter long, called a messhangushi, in hopes of a good harvest.
