Futami Amagoi Odori (Rain Dance)

Category Name:Furyu (Furyu Style Dance)

This is a local performing art that was introduced from the Uyanagi area of Yatsushiro City to the Suguchi area around the end of the Edo period. In times of drought, this dance is performed at the Ryugu Shrine in the town of Suguchi as a prayer for rain, good harvest, and family safety. The dance depicts the Battle of Kawanakajima between Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen clans, with flower sticks representing the Uesugi Kenshin and Chinese fans representing the Takeda Shingen. The large drum, which was reskinned in 1990, weighs 300 kg. The body is made from a 1,500-year old zelkova “keyaki” tree, a rare and precious object rarely seen in Kumamoto Prefecture today. The group consists of two hana-bo (flower sticks), about 20 kara-ohgi (Chinese fans), two dora, one kane, and two yokobue (transverse flutes). All but the transverse flutes are performed by children under 12 years of age.
