Kikuchi-no-Matsu-bayashi
Active
Category Name:Kagura
This said to have originated during the Nanboku-cho period (second half of the 14th century), when Lord KIKUCHI Takemitsu, who, in welcoming the Seisei Shogun Prince Kaneyoshi, had it performed to celebrate the New Year. Kikuchi's "Matsubayashi" consists of three parts: the celebratory Serifu (lines), the dance with bamboo performed to the music of large tsuzumi, drums, and singers (Jiutai), and the fan dance performed to the music of drums and singers (Jiutai). Lyrics in the third part, "The colors of spring are fluttering down from the east," have similarities with "Matsubayashi," performed by Kanze, who performed for the Muromachi shogunate.
