Kodai Odori ( Ancient Dance)

Active

Category Name:Furyu (Furyu Style Dance)

Handed down from ancient times in the secluded Gokanoshō Kureko district, it is said to have been performed by Heika descendents living hidden away in memory of Kyoto. Wearing white coats, maroon hakama, and wig-like head coverings made of black tail feathers of Kureko chicken (a Kumamoto Prefecture natural treasure) called "shaguma", kane and a locally handmade shimedaiko are played during a slow dance with a melancholy atmosphere. There is still a nenbutsu dance in which people chant nenbutsu, Buddhist prayers.
