Active

Category Name:Kagura

Kooyama Tenman-gu Shrine is located in Kooyama, Matsubase Town. It was built about 500 years ago. The shrine is dedicated to Michizane Sugawara, the famous god of learning, who was enshrined here from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. The Children's Kagura is performed by seven elementary school children and consists of two dancers, two drummers, and three beat keepers called "jaguwarin". The maidens are dressed in red kari-ginu (a traditional over garment), hakama, white tabi (split-toed socks), and tate-eboshi (a tall straight black hat). They dance gracefully, mixing stillness and movement, with the kagura bell in their right hands and the oogushii (stick) in their left. The drummers wear yellow kari-ginu and tasuki (sash). They use the drumsticks with a mixture of strength and speed. The beat keepers wear brown kari-gi and hold 30cm diameter cymbals on each side, accompanying the dancers.
