Category Name:Furyu (Furyu Dance)

A street performance during the Edo era. It was first performed in Osaka about 250 years ago during the Horeki era (1751-1764), and was called "chongare." When it moved to Edo, it became "chobokure." Holding bells and baton like sticks in their hands, they danced at doorways and other places with fast-paced songs inviting the spirits to the festival grounds. This style of dancing, combining Hogaku and Butoh, became popular culture about 200 years during Bunsei period (1818-1830). It is a kind of popular ditty in which a small wooden gong with fish features is beaten and verses are added to the Ahodara-kyou (a sutra), etc., and chanted quickly. It was popular in the Edo period, and is thought to have contained criticism of the shogunate administration by the townspeople.
